Where Have I Been?!

{Spring Fever is in full effect in New York City!}

Anybody else feel like they blinked and it was April? I could've sworn New Years Eve was just yesterday.  This year is flying by and this semester has been especially insane. I started off Spring semester with a presentation in studio, it was a short production that I created using several different scripts and poems.  I worked over break to piece the texts together and created a performance I was so proud of.  After that we jumped into scenes and projects, I suddenly had so much going on I could barely find time to breathe.  With rehearsals lasting all night long and pages upon pages of scripts to memorize just days before presenting these scenes, I was overwhelmed and stressed out to say the least.

Luckily this week we have moved on to rehearsal projects and a new schedule that has cut down on outside rehearsals.  The transition has provided a nice semi-break and I have finally caught up on everything.  One of the things I missed most during the past few months is blogging.  I was so busy and with my focus being pulled in so many different directions, there was no way I could sit down and think about a new blog post.  This week though, my inspiration has been restored and I am so excited to get back to work on Handbags & Heartbeats! This blog is something I really enjoy and it's an outlet I have come to find I need in my life. Keep checking back, I have some fun posts coming up!

So You Know...

There are a few things I have been loving recently and I couldn’t help but share them with you!

The Skimm – this website allows you to sign up to get emails every (weekday) morning with all the news you need to know.  They skim articles for you, then summarize the big stuff, so that you are up to date on current events.  I don’t have a television at school, so this morning email is the perfect way to ensure I am aware of what’s happening in the world. Quick, to the point, and oh so helpful. Get in the loop here

This awesome ad for Under Armor proves that ballet is, in fact, a sport. I love the entire video and I am so happy the sports world is finally catching on.

I love Broadway - I saw Wicked as a kid and have been a musical theater fanatic ever since.  I saw the video of the Lion King cast performing on an airplane and was amazed (and jealous I wasn’t there.) Well, they’ve done it again, this time on a subway in New York.  Such a cool video, it makes me wonder why cool things like this don’t ever happen when I’m on the subway?

Princess Play

If I could be anyone for a day, I would switch places with Kate Middleton, and not just so I can have an amazing blowout.  I want to be a Princess.  Judge me if you will but I dream about Julie Andrews knocking on my door and telling me Genovia is waiting for me. The pretty dresses, the tiaras, horseback rides into the sunset with a handsome Prince – the fantasy stems from Disney Princess envy, we all have it. Honestly, this all stems from my vain desire to have a title.  Having someone say “Your Majesty” or, “Right this way, Your Highness.”  It has a nice ring to it, right? Prince Harry, I am available.

In high school I was able to live out these fantasies by dressing up as Snow White to perform at an annual fundraiser and children’s birthday parties.  You probably think I am crazy, but let me explain.  This was “credit” for a drama class I took at the time and counted as “stage hand hours” – it was either this or building sets, I think you would’ve chosen to dress up like a princess too.  The scary part is I do look a lot like Snow White with the costume on.  I always got a kick out of driving to these parties, you have to arrive dressed up – it’s all about the illusion and you have to be careful to not ruin it.  I would stuff my hoop skirt in the front seat and my mom and I would casually wave at people next to us who would point and stare (this is normal, right?) We would park down the block and walk up to the party – that way the kids couldn’t ask to see the carriage.

My favorite part of going to these birthday parties was seeing how serious the little girls became as soon as I walked in the door.  After every grand entrance the interrogation would begin, they would ask me where the dwarves were or what my Prince was up to.  These little girls were so excited to see a cartoon come to life. We would dance and play games and at the end I would sing “Happy Birthday” before making a gracious exit.  I always enjoyed being Snow White. It’s fun to be a Disney princess if only for a short while. To these young girls I was “the real deal” and they finally got an opportunity to spend time with their favorite Princess.
